About
The Online Exhibition ‘Isolated Memories: Remembering Colonial Deportations from Libya to Italy’ is part of a broader research project (Colonial Memories: Remembering Libyan Deportations from the Italian Borderscape). The project aimed at exploring the memory work on colonial deportations from Libya to Italy in former sites of confinement (the islands of Ponza, Favignana, Ustica, the Tremiti Archipelago and the city of Gaeta).
The section ‘Local Communities and the Memory of Colonial Deportations’ is the result of an online workshop run by Dr Galadriel Ravelli in December 2023, which featured a group of local stakeholders from the islands of Ponza, Favignana, Ustica, the Tremiti Archipelago and the city of Gaeta. Throughout the workshop, participants were encouraged to engage with the pictures featured in the exhibition and reflect on the way they materialise (or not) the past presence of Libyan deportees, and the implications this has on broader discussions on the colonial legacy in Italy and Europe. The comments emerging from the discussions have been anonymised and included in this section of the exhibition.
The author wishes to thank the participants of the online workshop for sharing their views and ideas (as well as pictures) before, during, and after the event.
The project was led by Dr Galadriel Ravelli and was funded through a BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grant (SRG22\220210).
Galadriel Ravelli is a Lecturer in Italian Studies at the University of Bath (UK).
